AI+Social Media
The concentration of digital power in a few dominant platforms has created systemic risks where engagement-driven algorithms that include increasingly opaque AI components often prioritize profit over the integrity of global discourse. This track addresses these systemic risks by bridging the gap between abstract legal frameworks and practical technical implementation in Europe and Switzerland.
Participants will gain practical insights from a variety of perspectives, ranging from AI research to legal scholarship. We will discuss the current legal landscape, empirical findings on existing failures, and integrated solutions to mitigate platform-driven harms.
The session starts with an introduction to the topic by Profs. Aurelia Tamò-Larrieux and Simon Mayer. Next is an opening keynote on Algorithmic Transparency in Social Media-embedded AI systems by Dr. João Vinagre of the European Centre for Algorithmic Transparency and the European Joint Research Centre.
After the keynote, the program includes brief lightning inputs from a range of researchers across Europe - followed by a discussion break where participants of the track have the opportunity to engage with their research first-hand.
The session will finally culminate in a panel discussion on the impact of AI-infused recommender systems in social media platforms.
